Coco Gauff to Challenge Jessica Pegula in WTA Finals
Gauff Advances after Beating Sabalenka in Straight Sets
Coco Gauff has advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets on Wednesday. Gauff, the youngest player in the tournament at 18 years old, won 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Gauff played aggressively from the start, hitting deep groundstrokes and serving well. She broke Sabalenka's serve twice in the first set and held on to win the set 6-4. In the second set, Gauff broke Sabalenka's serve again in the fourth game and held on to win the set 6-3.
Pegula Reaches Semifinals with Win over Swiatek
Jessica Pegula also advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over world No. 1 Iga Swiatek on Wednesday. Pegula, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, played a solid match and never allowed Swiatek to get into a rhythm.
Pegula broke Swiatek's serve three times in the match, including twice in the first set. She also saved all four of the break points she faced. Pegula's win over Swiatek is her second top-10 win of the week, after she defeated Maria Sakkari in the round-robin stage.
Gauff and Pegula to Face off in Semifinals
Gauff and Pegula will face off in the semifinals of the WTA Finals on Friday. Gauff will be looking to reach her first WTA Finals final, while Pegula will be looking to reach her second consecutive final. Pegula lost to Swiatek in last year's final.
Gauff and Pegula have split their two previous meetings, with Gauff winning their most recent match in the quarterfinals of the French Open earlier this year. The winner of their match on Friday will face either Ons Jabeur or Aryna Sabalenka in the final on Sunday.
