Election Night May Not Decide Presidential Race
Political experts say it may be days before final results are known
The outcome of the 2020 presidential election may not be known on Election Night, according to a political science professor at the University of Virginia.
In an interview with the Washington Post, Kyle Kondik said that the tight race between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, combined with the large number of mail-in ballots that are expected to be cast, could lead to a delay in the final results.
“It's possible that we won't know who the winner is on election night,” Kondik said. “It could be days or even weeks before all the votes are counted.”
Why might the election results be delayed?
- There are a record number of mail-in ballots that are expected to be cast in this election.
- Many states are allowing voters to cast their ballots early, either in person or by mail.
- The counting of mail-in ballots can take several days or even weeks, depending on the state.
Kondik said that the delay in the results could lead to a period of uncertainty and anxiety, as both sides await the final outcome.
“It's important to remember that the election is not over until all the votes are counted,” Kondik said. “We need to be patient and allow the process to play out.”
What can voters do to help ensure a smooth and timely election?
- Request your mail-in ballot as soon as possible.
- Return your mail-in ballot as soon as possible.
- If you are voting in person, be prepared for long lines and delays.
- Be patient and respectful of election officials.
Kondik said that he believes that the election results will eventually be known, but it may take some time.
“The most important thing is to ensure that every vote is counted,” Kondik said. “We need to have faith in the process and allow it to play out.”
