Florida 2024 Ballot Amendment 1: What You Need to Know
Amendment 1: The Basics
Florida voters will have the opportunity to vote on Amendment 1 in the 2024 general election. The amendment, if passed, would make several changes to the state's constitution, including:
- Increasing the homestead exemption. The homestead exemption is a tax break that reduces the amount of property taxes that homeowners pay on their primary residence. Amendment 1 would increase the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $75,000.
- Expanding the sales tax exemption for diapers and baby wipes. Currently, diapers and baby wipes are exempt from sales tax in Florida. Amendment 1 would expand this exemption to include adult diapers and wipes.
- Creating a new sales tax exemption for feminine hygiene products. Feminine hygiene products, such as tampons and pads, are not currently exempt from sales tax in Florida. Amendment 1 would create a new exemption for these products.
The Pros and Cons of Amendment 1
There are both pros and cons to Amendment 1. Supporters of the amendment argue that it would provide much-needed tax relief to homeowners, families with young children, and low-income residents. Opponents of the amendment argue that it would reduce the amount of revenue that the state collects, which could lead to cuts in essential services.
The Florida Legislature has estimated that Amendment 1 would reduce state revenue by $548 million in the first year after it is implemented. The amendment would also have a long-term impact on state revenue, as the homestead exemption and sales tax exemptions would continue to grow over time.
It is important to note that Amendment 1 is not the only measure that will be on the ballot in the 2024 general election. Voters will also have the opportunity to vote on several other amendments, as well as candidates for state and local offices.
