Real Madrid's Ancelotti slams Spanish league after deadly storm
Floods cause Clasico postponement, leave six dead and hundreds homeless
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has slammed the Spanish league (La Liga) for not postponing last weekend's Clasico clash with Barcelona following deadly floods that left six people dead and hundreds homeless.
Match should have been called off says Ancelotti
The match went ahead despite torrential rain and flooding in the Valencia region, where the game was being played. Ancelotti said he had spoken to La Liga president Javier Tebas and told him the match should have been called off.
"The game should not have been played," Ancelotti said. "It was a shame that it went ahead. I told Tebas that I thought it was a mistake to play the game and he agreed with me."
Six people killed in floods
The storm caused widespread flooding in the Valencia region, with six people killed and hundreds of homes destroyed. The match was played in the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia, which was one of the areas worst affected by the flooding.
The match was eventually played behind closed doors, with no fans allowed to attend. Ancelotti said he understood the decision to play the match behind closed doors, but he still believes the game should have been postponed.
La Liga defends decision to go ahead with match
La Liga has defended its decision to go ahead with the match, saying that it was taken in consultation with the authorities and the clubs involved.
La Liga president Javier Tebas said: "We spoke to the authorities and the clubs and we all agreed that the game could go ahead. We understand that the weather was bad, but we felt that the game could be played safely."
Real Madrid win 3-1
Despite the controversy surrounding the decision to go ahead with the match, Real Madrid went on to win 3-1. Karim Benzema scored twice for Real Madrid, with Vinicius Junior also getting on the scoresheet.
The win moved Real Madrid top of the La Liga table, one point ahead of Barcelona.
