One month after his electoral defeat: This is how former Sylt mayor Häckel is doing today

After 16 years in office, Nikolas Häckel lost the mayoral election on the North Sea island of Sylt in September 2022. Since then, things have been quiet around the CDU politician. But what is Häckel doing today?

The former mayor is currently enjoying his retirement, he told the German Press Agency. He is spending a lot of time with his family and is also pursuing his hobbies, such as sailing and cycling.

Häckel does not miss his job as mayor, he said. "I had a great time, but it was also very stressful. I'm glad I can now take a step back and enjoy my life."

The CDU politician does not rule out a return to politics. "I'm not saying no to anything," he said. "But for now, I'm happy to take a break."

Häckel's successor as mayor is the independent candidate Petra Reiber. She was elected in a runoff election in October 2022.
