Yankees' Pitching Acquisition is Falling Flat on His Face
A Promising Start Gone Awry
The New York Yankees made a big splash in the offseason, acquiring ace pitcher Gerrit Cole in a blockbuster trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cole, a former Cy Young Award winner, was expected to be the cornerstone of the Yankees' rotation and lead them to their first World Series title since 2009.However, Cole has struggled mightily since joining the Yankees. In his first 10 starts, he has a 4.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 53 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched. He has also allowed 10 home runs, which is tied for the most in the American League.
What's Gone Wrong?
There are a number of factors that have contributed to Cole's struggles. Firstly, he has not been able to locate his fastball consistently. He is also not throwing his slider as effectively as he did in Pittsburgh. In addition, the Yankees' defense has not been particularly strong behind Cole. They have committed 10 errors in his starts, which is tied for the most in the American League.
